March 19th, 2005: Loulé - São Teotónio, Zambujeira do Mar
Drive to São Teotónio where we visited Mr. and Mrs. Strahm in their beautiful house. I had met Dr. Strahm in the airplane coming from Brussels. It was really nice and we were honored with a delicious cake Mrs. Strahm had baked for us. In the evening we drove East to Zambujeira do Mar and chose a place to stay overnight next to some kind of sports ground in the center but very quiet.

19. 03. 2005: Loulé - São Teotónio, Zambujeira do Mar
Fahrt nach Sao Teotónio, wo wir Familie Dr. Strahm in ihrem wunderschönen Haus besucht haben. Ich habe Dr. Strahm im Flugzeug von Brüssel nach Faro kennen gelernt. Wir haben einen sehr schönen, interessante Nachmittag bei ihnen verbracht und Frau Strahm hat einen herrlichen, selbstgebackenen Aprikosenkuchen serviert! Abends sind wir nach Zambujeira do Mar gefahren und haben uns dort neben einem Sportplatz im Stadtzentrum, jedoch sehr ruhig, für die Nacht installiert.

March 20th, 2005: Zambujeira do Mar
Today is a relax day. We moved up to the cliff's coast and I, Julia, spent the whole day sleeping. I just walk once down to the beach, that's all.

20. 03. 05: Zambujeira do Mar
Heute legen wir einen Relax-Tag ein. Wir haben uns oben auf der Felsenküste installiert und den ganzen Tag habe ich, Julia, geschlafen. Ich bin nur einmal raus, um runter zum Strand zu laufen.

March 21th, 2005: Zambujeira do Mar - Beja - Trujillo
Drive to Beja where we did some grocery shopping at the good Modelo Supermarket and then had dinner at "Pulo do Lobo" -the place we had been last year. We had some great "Pluma" and "Secreto" both of the black pork. Wow, absolutely delicious and 1/2 a portion is actually enough (6€ - full portion 9€), especially if you enjoy the couvert dish with the special ham and cheese. Drive up to Trujillo in Spain following the free of charge IP2, then the parallel road to the motorway up to Elvas at the Portuguese-Spanish border. From Badajoz (Spain) on, the motorway is free of charge. We drove all the way up to Trujillo and visited the lovely Plaza Mayor with its beautiful buildings and cafés. We had already been here in Trujillo in January 1990, but Volker couldn't remember anymore. We managed to walk back through pretty heavy rain to our overnight site located just South of Trujillo next to the Guarda Civil (police station) and to a corn mill.

21. 03. 2005: Zambujeira do Mar - Beja - Trujillo
Fahrt nach Beja, wo wir noch einige Einkäufe bei dem gut sortiertem Supermarkt Modelo getätigt haben. Dann haben wir uns noch erlaubt, beim Restaurant "Pulo do Lobo", bei dem wir letztes Jahr mit dem Iveco-Werkstatt-Besitzer waren, zu Mittag zu essen. Es war ganz ausgezeichnet. Wir haben eine ganze Portion Pluma vom schwarzen Schwein (9 €) und eine 1/2 Portion Secreto vom schwarzen Schwein (6 €) bestellt. Die halbe Portion ist völlig ausreichend, zumal man gerne den Kuvert mit speziellem Schinken und Käse davor genießt. Fahrt bis Trujillo in Spanien. Wir sind über die IP-2 bis Evora gefahren, dann entlang der Mautautobahn auf der kostenlosen N-18 bis Elvas an der portugiesisch-spanischen Grenze gefahren. Danach von Badajoz in Spanien kann man die kostenfreie Autobahn bis Trujillo fahren. Wir haben noch die alte Innenstadt von Trujillo besichtigt (hatten wir schon Januar 1990, aber Volker konnte sich nicht mehr daran erinnern) und sind im strömenden Regen zurück zu unserem Übernachtungsplatz gleich am Eingang am Südrand der Stadt, bei der Guardia Civil (Polizeistation) und neben einer Kornmühle.

March 22th, 2005: Trujillo - Parque Natural de Monfragüe
Wow, no rain anymore! We can continue exploring Trujillo. This town hasn't probably changed for the last 200 years. You really feel like back in history. There are not more shops or restaurants than usually in these kind of cities. Of course, we managed to find a tapas bar lost up in the old town. And then we repeated our experience from last night when we entered Sandra Bar to wait for the rain to stop - and had again the delicious tapas "ensaladilla". At 12:30 we drove towards Monfragüe Natural Park on the X-208 and stopped at a nice picnic place along the river Tozo and had spaghetti bolognese (you don't say). After a short siesta we drove up to the Natural Park Monfragüe where we watched many Griffon and Black Vultures at the Tajo River (yes, the same that runs out in Lisbon: Tejo). Overnight stay along the river Tajo.

22. 03. 2005: Trujillo - Parque Natural de Monfragüe
Super, heute regnet es nicht. Also können wir unsere Trujillo-Erkundungstour fortsetzen. Diese Stadt hat sich in den letzten 200 Jahren wohl kaum verändert - zumindest hat man das Gefühl, in die Geschichte zurück versetzt worden zu sein. Diese Stadt hat nicht mehr Geschäfte oder Restaurants als eine normale Stadt, ist also noch sehr authentisch. Natürlich haben wir es geschafft, trotzdem eine Tapas Bar da oben in der Altstadt zu finden. Und auf den Rückweg haben wir nochmal einen Stopp eingelegt in der Sandra Bar, wo wir gestern abend, als wir Schutz vor den Regen aufgesucht haben, schon die Ensaladilla-Tapa gegessen hatten. Gegen 12:30 Uhr sind wir dann über die X-208 in Richtung Parque Natural Monfragüe gefahren. Mittagspause am Picknickplatz neben dem Fluss Tozo mit Spaghetti Bolognese (ach nee). Nach einem kurzen Mittagsschlaf weiter zum Parque Natural Monfragüe, wo wir viele Gänse- und Mönchsgeier am Tajo-Fluss (ja, der gleiche, der in Lissabon mündet) beobachten konnten. Übernachtungsplatz am Río Tajo.

March 23th, 2005: Parque Natural de Monfragüe - Malpartida de Plasencia
Hike up to Monfragüe castle and back along the river Tajo to the "Salto del Gitano" rock where we have seen lots of Griffon Vultures and a 3 Black Storks. Just when we were back in our RV it began raining. Dinner at the Restaurant Monfragüe at Villarreal de San Carlos (menu for 8 € each). Due to problems with our batteries (we have ordered new ones, but they will take a while until they arrive in Portugal), we decided to drive to the Campground 12 km from Villarreal de San Carlos, and got a nice site with views over a field with lots of birds! The rain eventually stopped and we took our bicycles and drove to Monfragüe's train station which lies in the middle of a ghost town! We then headed to Malpartida de Plasencia which lies about 8 km from our campground. In the evening we watched a DVD in our RV. Overnight at the Campground Parque Natural de Monfragüe (15,80 € per night for 2 adults, the van and electricity)

23. 03. 2005: Parque Natural de Monfragüe - Malpartida de Plasencia
Wanderung hoch zur Monfragüe Burg und zurück entlang des Río Tajo zum Felsen "Salto del Gitano" der viele Vögel beherbergt: Gänse-, Schmutzgeier, Schwarzstörche. Als wir ins Wohni zurück kamen, fing es an zu regnen. Mittagessen im Restaurant Monfragüe bei Villarreal de San Carlos (Menü für 8 € p.P.). Da wir Probleme mit den Aufbaubatterien haben (die neuen sind schon bestellt, aber es wird noch eine Weile dauern, bis sie in Portugal ankommen) haben wir uns entschieden, zum Campingplatz zu fahren, der 12 km von Villarreal entfernt ist. Wir haben einen schönen Platz mit Blick auf einer Wiese mit vielen Vögeln bekommen. Irgendwann hat es auch aufgehört zu regnen, und wir sind mit unseren Fahrrädern zur Monfragües Bahnhof, das inmitten einer Geisterstadt liegt, gefahren. Danach sind wir noch nach Malpartida de Plasencia gefahren, das ca. 8 km vom Campingplatz liegt. Abends haben wir noch eine DVD angeschaut. Übernachtung im Campingplatz Parque natural de Monfragüe (15,80 € pro Nacht für 2 Erwachsene, ein Womo und Strom).

March 24th, 2005: Parque Natural de Monfragüe
Drive to Villarreal de San Carlos where we hit the "green" trail. The first part we walked along the river Malvecino which is really a beautiful nature. Then we went up to Cerro Gimio where we enjoyed panoramic views over Salto del Gitano, Río Tajo, and also Monfragüe's Castle. Lunch at the mirador "La Báscula" and after lunch we enjoyed watching all kind of birds at Portilla del Tietar. We saw an eagle owl with two youngs and short toed eagles, and of course, all kinds of vultures. At 6 PM we drove back to our campground where we were happy to have reserved our site because everything is full and there are only a few spaces for tall RVs!

24. 03. 2005: Parque Natural de Monfragüe
Fahrt nach Villarreal de San Carlos, um von dort aus unsere "grüne" Wanderung zu beginnen. Wir sind zuerst mal entlang eines hübschen Flusses "Malvecino" gegangen und dann hoch zum Berg "Cerro Gimio", von wo aus wir einen panoramischen Blick auf Salto del Gitano, den Fluss Tajo und ebenfalls auf Monfragües Burg hatten. Mittagessen am Mirador "La Báscula" und danach haben wir langeam Portilla del Tiétar die verschiedenen Vögel beobachtet. Neu kamen hinzu: ein Uhu mit zwei Kleinies und Schlangenadler, außerdem die verschiedenen Geier, die wir schon gestern gesehen haben. Zurück zum Campingplatz um 18 Uhr, wo wir glücklicherweise unseren Platz heute Morgen reserviert hatten. Der Campingplatz ist voll und es sind nur wenige Plätze, die für Wohnis sind.
