14.05.00 Our campground "Thousand Lakes" in Torrey (elev. 2,080 m) was comfortable and nice, so we decided to spend a full day relaxing, reading the sunday's newspaper (with all those discount coupons!), removing red desert sand from the camper and drinking espresso at "Books & Café" in Torrey. In the evening we went to "Capitol Reef Café" and had a very tasty smoked trout (hot) and orange-coconut backed shrimps.
14.05.00 Unser Campingplatz "Thousand Lakes" in Torrey (2080 m) war sehr schön, so haben wir den ganzen Tag ausgespannt, z.B. die Sonntagszeitung gelesen (mit den ganzen Rabattcoupons!), den roten Wüstensand aus dem Wohni aus allen möglichen Ecken und Schlössern versucht zu entfernen und Espresso im "Books & Café" getrunken. Abends sind wir ins "Capitol Reef Café" gegangen, und haben ein warmes, geräuchtertes Forellenfilet sowie Scampis gebacken in Orange-Kokosnus-Teig gegessen.

15.05.00 We rented a 4x4 Suzuki for today to drive through Cathedral Valley. And this was a spectacular drive! In the evening we hit the Highway 12 (called Scenic Byway 12) towards Dixie National Forest where we spent the night at a very quite place in the forest at a trailhead near the pass (elev. 2,900 m). This was also one of the access trails to the GWT (Great Western Trail) which begins in Canada and goes right through the US to Mexico. Scenic Byway 12 offers panoramas of vast slickrock "oceans" and scenic canyons cut by the Escalante River. You can't imagine how I was tired this evening, so I came to the conclusion that beeing a passenger in a 4x4 car (Volker drove all the 200 km) driving on dirt roads with such spectacular views is extremely strenious and tiring.
15.05.00 Für heute haben wir einen Allradantrieb Suzuki gemietet, um durch Cathedral Valley zu fahren. Es war eine besonders atemberaubende Landschaft, die wir bei dieser Fahrt erlebt haben! Abends sind wir über den Highway 12 (auch Scenic Byway 12 genannt) bis Dixie National Forest gefahren und haben dort die Nacht an einem sehr ruhigem Platz mitten im Wald an einem Wanderweg-Startpunkt in der Nähe vom Pass (2.900 m Höhe) verbracht. Dort war übrigens auch eins der Zubringerpfade zu dem Great Western Trail - kurz GWT genannt-, der von Canada bis Mexico verläuft. Die Scenic Byway 12 bietet Ausblicke auf weite Sandstein-"Ozeane" und schöne Schluchten, die durch den Escalante Fluß geformt werden. Ich war totmüde gestern abend: Ich bin zum Schluß gekommen, daß Beifahrer (Volker ist die ganzen 200 km gefahren) in einem 4x4 Wagen bei einer Abenteuerfahrt auf ungeteerten Straßen furchtbar anstrengend und ermüdend ist.

16.05.00 In the morning, it was very windy in Dixie National Forest. The landscape up here was totally different from where we had come. And we had a fantastic view on Henry Mountains, Capitol Reef National Park, Escalante etc. We continued on the Scenic Byway 12 and drove down to Boulder and then to Calf Creek Recreation Area / Escalante National Monument where we settled down at the nice campground. In the afternoon we hiked the trail to the very colorful "Lower Calf Creek Falls" (4 hours).
16.05.00 Morgens war es sehr windig oben im Dixie National Forest. Die Landschaft war nun auch ganz anders als "da unten", und wir hatten fantastische Ausblicke auf die Henry Mountains, Capitol Reef National Park, Escalante etc. Wir sind weiter auf der Scenic Byway 12 nach Boulder gefahren und haben uns erstmal auf dem schönen Campingplatz in der Calf Creek Recreation Area im Escalante National Monument niedergelassen. Nachmittags haben wir die Wanderung zu den sehr farbigen "Lower Calf Creek Falls" (Wasserfälle) unternommen (4 Stunden).

17.05.00 Yesterday it was windy and today it was cold and cloudy (max. 19 °C). Escalante Petrified Forest State Park was our first destination, and, I can tell you, I was fascinated! It is really amazing to see these petrified trees dating back some 160 million years with their colorful mineralized wood. These trees were huge and are totally different from the ones you see nowadays in the pygmee-woods where they are found nowadays. In the afternoon we drove to Kodachrome Basin State Park and it began to rain and hail quite heavily. When we arrived we decided to stay overnight in this Park to be able to do some trails the next day. But the massive sandstone chimneys and everything else looked so interesting that we didn't wait for the next day and hit two trails right away. Weather got nice again although it was still pretty cold, but we enjoyed it a lot.
17.05.00 Gestern abend war es sehr windig geworden und heute war es kalt und bewölkt (Höchsttemperatur 19 °C). Escalante Petrified Forest State Park war unser erstes heutiges Ziel. Ich war absolut fasziniert von diesen versteinerten Bäume, ca. 160 Millionen Jahre alt, die dort in einer unglaublichen Farbenpracht zu bewundern sind. Die waren sehr groß und ganz anders als die Bäume, die dort heutzutage in dem sog. Pygmäenwald vorzufinden sind. Nachmittags sind wir zum Kodachrom Basin State Park gefahren, und es hat angefangen ziemlich heftig zu regnen und hageln. Als wir angekommen sind, haben wir uns entschieden, auf dem Campingplatz zu übernachten, damit wir am nächsten Tag einige Wanderungen machen können. Aber die massiven Sandstein-Kamine und alles sonst sahen so interessant aus, daß wir gleich losgewandert sind und sogar zwei Wanderungen unternommen haben. Das Wetter war dann auch wieder schön obwohl kalt, und wir haben es sehr genossen.
