30.06.00 Drive straight through Warm Springs Indian Reservation, crossed the Columbia River at Hood River, came into Washington State, and drove up to the Gifford Pinchot National Forest into the Paradise Campground which was absolutely remote and in the middle of a dense forest. During the drive we had magnificient views on the Three Sisters, the Bachelor, Mount Jefferson and Mount Adams!
30.06.00 Fahrt "mit Scheuklappen" durch das Indianerreservat "Warm Springs", haben den Columbian River in Hood River überquert und in Washington State reingefahren, dann weiter hoch bis in den Gifford Pinchot National Forest, wo wir im Paradise Campground übernachtet haben. Dieser Platz war wirklich total abgelegen und tief im Wald. Während der ganzen heutigen Fahrt hatten wir fantastische Blicke auf die 3 Sisters, den Bachelor, Mount Jefferson und Mount Adams!

01.07.00 Drive to Mt. St. Helens Volcanic National Monument: On May 18, 1980, after two months of increasing volcanic activity, Mount St. Helens erupted explosively. A huge portion of the dome and the North side collapsed in a massive landslide towards Spirit Lake. This altered the surrounding landscape in dramatic ways (see postcard below). After seeing a film of the eruption and hearing a ranger talk about the events, we took a hike on the Loomit trail which surrounds the vulcano. This was quite a different hike, very interesting! Overnight parking at a so-called SNO-Park.
01.07.00 Besuch des Mt. St. Helens Volcanic National Monument. Am 18. Mai 1980, nach zwei Monaten intensiver vulkanischer Aktivität, ist der Mount St. Helen mit einer Explosion ausgebrochen. Dabei ist ein riesen Stück von der Spitze und ein Teil der Nordseite des Berges weggerutscht Richtung Spirit Lake. Dieser Ausbruch hat die umgebende Landschaft dramatisch verändert (siehe Postkarte unten). Nachdem wir uns einen sehr interessanten Film im Besucherzentrum über die Eruption angeschaut haben sowie an einer Ranger-Information teilgenommen haben, sind wir ein Stück den Loomit Trail entlang gewandert. Dieser Weg geht einmal am Rande des Vulkans herum. Das war mal eine andere Art Wanderung, sehr interessant! Übernachtung auf einem SNO-Parking (Schnee-Parkplatz).

02./03.07.00 It has been a long time since we had rain and so it rained until we reached the Campground on the Kopachuk State Park near Gig Harbor. We walked down to the sea shore and enjoyed the view on the estuary. On the next day we drove into Gig Harbor -we had been there 3 years ago- then up to Port Townsend making a stop at the Underwater Navy Museum in Keyport. I was very impressed by the sophisticated museum and the very interesting displays in this museum. It actually shows the first attempts people diving, of submarines and torpedos/mines up until nowadays. We ended our trip in Port Townsend where we booked a whale watching tour for tomorrow to the San Juan Islands! Today Volker isn't feeling very well -he got my flue- so I took my bicycle and rode into town, had an "Elevated Ice Cream" downtown and rode back to the Jefferson County Fairgrounds where we have a very pleasant and quiet place to stay overnight.
02./03.07.00 Es ist schon lange her, daß wir Regen hatten... und so hat es bis nachmittags geregnet, als wir auf dem Campingplatz des Kopachuk State Parks angekommen sind. Wir sind dann runter zur See gegangen und haben den schönen Blick auf die Bucht genossen. Am nächsten Tag sind wir dann Richtung Port Townsend gefahren und haben einen Stopp am Unterwater Navy Museum in Keyport eingelegt. Ich bin wirklich über die sehr hoch qualitativ aufgebaute Ausstellungsräume mit vielen interessanten Displays beeindruckt. Danach sind wir nach Port Townsend gefahren, haben dort noch Platz für eine Bootsfahrt zu einer Walbeobachtung in der Nähe der San Juan Inseln ergattert und haben uns am Festplatz (Jefferson County Fairgrounds), wo es sehr ruhig ist, niedergelassen. Da sich Volker heute nicht so gut fühlt - er halt sich wohl mit meiner Erkältung angesteckt - bin ich alleine in die Innenstadt geradelt und habe dort ein Eis bis "Elevated Ice Cream" gegessen.

04.07.00 4th of July: whale watching for us. We booked a boat tour from Port Townsend to San Juan Islands specialized in whale watching. We really saw some 30 Orcas or Killer Whales (7-9 m long) and 2 Minke Whales (10 m long)! Above all, the whole boat tour was a great experience and the crew -Captain Chris, guide Andrew and the girl who took care of us with lots of coffee and delicious blueberry cake were absolutely fantastic. Also we had fun with our booth companions Jay and Gail from Albuquerque, New Mexico. During our 3 hour stop in Friday Harbor -the only city on San Juan Island- we saw the end of the 4th of July parade, ate fish and chips at the Crabhouse, and, of course, walked around. When we came back to Port Townsend we were lucky to get a space on the Campground in Fort Worden State Park with the view on the sea.
04.07.00 4. Juli, Independence Day (= Unabhängigkeitstag), großer Feiertag in USA. Wir haben eine Bootstour gebucht, die uns zu den San Juan Islands bringt, und die auf Walbeobachtung spezialisiert ist. Und wir haben wirklich um die 30 Orcas (7-9 m lang) und 2 Minke Wale (10 m lang) gesehen! Die ganze Bootstour war aber sehr interessant, denn die Besatzung war sehr gut drauf: Kapitän Chris, der Guide Andrew und das Mädel, das uns ständig mit Kaffee und tollem Blaubeerkuchen versorgt hat. Auch war es sehr nett mit unseren Abteilungs-Nachbarn, Jay und Gail aus Albuquerque, New Mexico. Während des dreistündigen Aufenthalts in Friday Harbor - die einzige Stadt auf den San Juan Inseln - haben wir noch das Ende des Festzugs gesehen, haben tollen Fish & Chips im Crabhouse gegessen, und sind natürlich ein wenig rumgelaufen. Als wir zurück waren in Port Townsend, haben wir Glück gehabt, heute doch einen Platz auf dem Campingplatz von Fort Word State Park zu bekommen mit Blick aufs Wasser.
