05.07.00 After trying to catch the ferry going up to Whidbey Island at 11.45 am without success, we were only able to get on one at 1.15 pm -two ferries had been canceled because of the low tide on this day. When we arrived in Bellingham the day was almost over again... We settled down at a private campground, Bellingham RV Park. We went to the movies "The Perfect Storm" which is based on a true story, but we didn't like the film too much. Then we had some nice Mexican food at "Mi México" (I had my favorite dish quesadilla, this time with chorizo and chicken -excellent!)
05.07.00 Nachdem wir eigentlich vorhatten, die Fähre nach Whidbey Island um 11.45 Uhr zu erwischen, mußten wir leider 1,5 Stunden auf die nächste warten, denn 2 Fähren wurden wegen der zu niedrigen Ebbe an diesem Tag storniert. Als wir in Bellingham angekommen sind, war der Tag schon wieder um... Wir haben uns den Bellingham RV Park als Übernachtungscampingplatz ausgesucht. Abends sind wir noch ins Kino gegangen, haben uns "The Perfect Storm" angeschaut. Dieser Film basiert auf eine echte Geschichte, aber der Film hat uns nicht so sonderlich gefallen. Daraufhin sind wir zum mexikanischen Restaurant "Mi México" gefahren und ich habe mein Lieblingsgericht "Quesadilla", diesmal mit Chorizo und Huhn, bestellt - ausgezeichnet!

06.07.00 After doing the laundry, checking the emails, downloading our website, etc., we had a good American breakfast at Shary's. After having our camper washed at a carwash, we drove to Bayview Park, took our bicycles and rode along the bay down to the ferry terminal at Fairhaven. We got our ticket for the Alaska Marine Highway boat for tomorrow with the confirmation that we get a 2-bed room on the outer part of the boat. Happy to have all documents ready for the cruise, we rode up to the Colophon Café and had a fantastic milkshake. You bet we bought some books at the adjacent store Village Books. Then we rode back to the Park and continued north to Bellingham downtown along the shore. This was a nice ride -Bellingham is small city, not very crowded.
06.07.00 Nachdem wir die Wäsche gewaschen, die eMail abgerufen und unsere Website runtergeladen haben etc., sind wir erstmal zu Shary's und haben dort ein anständiges amerikanisches Frühstück eingenommen. Unser Wohni wurde auch heute endlich wieder in einem schicken Carwash gewaschen. Dann sind wir zum Bayview Park gefahren, haben dort unsere Fahrräder rausgeholt und sind die Bucht runter bis zum Fähreterminal in Fairhaven gefahren. Wir haben das Ticket vom Alaska Marine Highway Boot abgeholt und haben die Bestätigung für unsere 2er Kabine auf der Außenseite des Schiffes bekommen. Glücklich, daß wir das erledigt hatten, sind wir zum Colophon Café gefahren, haben dort einen fantastischen Milkshake runtergeschlürft, und natürlich einige Bücher im zugehörigen Village Books gekauft. Dann sind wir zurück zum Park geradelt, und weiter entlang der Küste bis zur Innenstadt. Das was wirklich eine schöne, einfache Tour - Bellingham ist eigentlich eine kleine, nicht sehr stark besiedelte Stadt.

07./08.07.00 Today is the big day: we are going to take the ferry to Alaska and will cruise the 1600 km Inside Passage from Bellingham to Ketchikan, Wrangell, Petersburg, Juneau up to Haines and Skagway. Actually, we were supposed to be on the Columbia, but 3 weeks ago the Columbia's power unit caught fire and she will not be running until next year. So they replaced it with the Matanuska, who is smaller but still very nice. After boarding our camper, we went to our nice outer stateroom (with a big window) and our ferry departed from Bellingham on time at 6 pm. We were surprised to find out that there are many things carried out on board, like talks from a National Forest Naturalist, movies etc. Our first stop will be on Sunday, July 9 at 6.30 am in Ketchikan.
07./08.07.00 Heute ist der große Tag: Wir nehmen die Fähre nach Alaska, die die 1600 km "Inside Passage" von Bellingham über Ketchikan, Wrangell, Petersburg, Juneau bis oben nach Haines und Skagway fährt. Eigentlich sollten wir auf die Columbia-Fähre, aber diese ist nach einem größeren Stromschaden vor ca. 3 Wochen ausgefallen; die Reparatur soll bis zu einem Jahr dauern. So sind wir nun auf der Matanuska, eine kleinere, aber sehr schöne Fähre. Nachdem wir unser Wohni reingefahren haben, haben wir unsere Außenkabine bezogen (mit einem großen Fenster), und unsere Fähre hat pünktlich um 18 Uhr abgelegt. Wir waren überrascht, wieviel hier an Bord organisiert wird, wie Vorträge von einem Naturexperten des National Forest Service, es gibt Filmvorführungen etc. Unser erster Stopp wird am Sonntag, den 9. Juli um 6.30 Uhr in Ketchikan sein.

09.07.00 Stops in Ketchikan, Wrangell and
Petersburg
We had to get up early to go ashore in Ketchikan, Alaska's
southernmost major city (pop 15,000). We jumped in a taxi that drove us
downtown, to Totem Bight State Historical Park and Saxman Totem Park, so
we saw plenty of totems. Ketchikan ist the city with most totems. Many
buildings are suspended above the water or cling to the hillside and have
winding staircases or wooden streets leading to their front doors. Next
stop was Wrangell (pop 2,500) at 4 pm. On dock, there were
children selling garnets, a semi-precious stone, that come from Garnet
Ledge. In 1962 a former mayor deeded the ledge to the children of
Wrangell, so now only children are allowed to sell garnets. We wandered
through Wrangell, waited 20 minutes in the line to buy an ice cream and
walked through Front Street to Kiksadi Totem Park and continued to Chief
Shake's Island, located in the town's Inner Boat Harbor, which features an
impressive collection of totem poles with the Shakes Community House.
When our ferry heads north from Wrangell, it threads its way through 46
turns of Wrangell Narrows, a 36-km narrow channel that is only 90 m wide
and 60 m deep in places. At the end of the Narrows lies Petersburg
(pop 3400), also called "Little Norway", because there are so
many descendants of Norwegian people living there. Peter Buschmann arrived
in the area in 1897 and found a fine harbor, abundant fish and a ready
supply of ice from nearby Le Conte Glacier. He built a cannery and enticed
his Norwegian friends to follow him there. We unfortunately didn't have
time to get into downtown, so we just got ashore and ate a (bad microwave
warmed-up) pizza. When we got to bed it was again about midnight.
09.07.00 Stopps in Ketchikan, Wrangell und
Petersburg
Wir mußten sehr früh aufstehen, um in Ketchikan, die südlichste
größere Stadt (15.000 Einwohner) ans Land zu gehen. Wir sind in
ein Taxi gesprungen, das uns in die Innenstadt, zum Totem Bight State
Historical Park und Saxman Totem Park gefahren hat, so daß wir viele
Totem sehen konnten. Ketchikan ist die Stadt mit den meisten Totems. Viele
Häuser hängen über dem Wasser oder am Berghang und haben
verwinkelte Treppen bzw. Holzstraßen, die zu ihrer Haustür führen.
Der nächste Stopp war Wrangell (2500 Einwohner) um 16 Uhr. Am
Pier erwarteten uns Kinder, die Garnets, ein Halbedelstein (ich weiß
nicht, wie das auf Deutsch heißt), die von Garnet Ledge stammen,
verkaufen. 1962 hat der damalige Bürgermeister den Standort, wo diese
Steine zu finden sind, den Kindern von Wrangell gestiftet, und so dürfen
nur Kinder diese Steine verkaufen. Wir sind durch Wrangell spazieren
gegangen, haben aber erstmal 20 Minuten in der Schlange für ein Eis
gestanden, sind dann die Front Street entlang zum Kiksadi Totem Park und
dann zur Chief Shake's Insel weiter, die sich im Inneren Hafen befindet
und eine reichhaltige Sammlung an Totems sowie ein Klanhaus aufweist. Wenn
die Fähre von Wrangell nach Norden fährt, windet sie sich durch
die Wrangell Narrows, einen 36 km langen Kanal, der an einigen Stellen nur
90 m breit und 60 m tief ist. Am Ende der Narrows liegt Petersburg
(3400 Einwohner), auch Klein Norwegen genannt, da so viele Nachkömmlinge
von Norweger dort leben. Peter Buschmann ist 1897 in der Gegend
eingetroffen und hat einen schönen Hafen, viel Fisch und einen
fertigen Vorrat an Eis im naheliegenden Le Conte Gletscher vorgefunden. Er
gründete eine Konservenfabrik und überzeugte seine norwegischen
Freunde, ihm zu folgen. Leider haben wir keine Zeit gehabt, um die Stadt
zu besichtigen, so daß wir nur am Hafen eine - schlechte,
mikrowellenaufgewärmte Pizza - gegessen haben. Als wir ins Bett
gegangen sind war es schon wieder Mitternacht.
