07.09.00 Hiked the Notch trail at Badlands Natl. Park, South Dakota. Lunch with very good Indian taco at the Woodenknive Cafe -this lonely place looked just like the Café in the movie "Bagdad Café"- in Interior, just 3 km south from Badlands. Drive through the Sioux Indian Reservation. In Wounded Knee we visited the site of the massacre (not developped) where 300 Indians were killed in 1890. Crossed the border to Nebraska and stopped at the Chadron State Park.

08.09.00 Drive to Agate Fossil Beds National Monument, Nebraska, where hundreds of animal skeletons aged about 19-20 million years were found. All of the animals whose fossil remains have been found here are now extict: Palaeocastor (a big prarie dog with a tail like a beaver), Stenomylus (a small gazelle-camel about 60 cm tall), Menoceras (pony-sized rhinoceros), etc. Overnight at the Gotte Municipal Park, where there is an obsolete Titan II Missile on display. The only good thing about the restaurant where we had dinner in Kimball were the "Minimum Requirements for Ranching" that were printed on our place mats. Hereafter an excerpt:

Minimum Requirement for Ranching
1. A wide-brimmed hat, one pair of tight pants and $20 boots from a discount house.
2. At least two head of livestock, preferably cattle -one male, one female.
3. A new air-conditioned pickup with automatic transmission, power steering and trailer hitch.
4. Two dogs to ride in the bed of the pickup truck.
5. A $40 horse and $300 saddle.
6. A gooseneck trailer, small enough to park in front of a café.
7. A spool of barbed wire, three cedar posts and a bale of prarie hay to haul around in the truck all day.
8. A pair of silver spurs to wear to barbecues.
9. A good wife who won't get upset when you walk across the living room carpet with manure on your boots.
10. A good wife with a good full-time job at the courthouse.

09.09.00 Drive from Kimball, South Dakota, to Cheyenne, Wyoming, where we had breakfast at Denny's -I love that Texan fajita skillet! Before entering Colorado we stopped at a guest (or "dude") ranch and had much fun looking at the animals they raise there (horses, of course, cows, of course, bisons, lamas, dromedars and ostriches). Estes Park, Colorado, was incredibly crowded because of a Scottish Festival beeing held during this week-end, so we moved on to the Rocky Mountain National Park. Overnight at the Glacier Basin Campground. At this point we reached the highest elevation since we are traveling on this continent: 2600 m!

10.09.00 Weather is really nice, warm and sunny during the day and cool during the night. We took up the shuttle to Bear Lake and walked around the lake as well as the Nymph Lake. Then we hiked over the Alberta Falls. After lunch we attended a ranger "talk-walk" (I mean actually a walk, but there is a lot of a talk too) about beavers, and after that the ranger took us to some interesting spots with new and older beaver dams, a beaver lodge. We even think we saw a beaver -at least we saw some branches being moved to a dam in a pond... After an hour pause at our campground Moraine Park, we drove up to West Horseshoe Park where various herds of elks were grazing, some bulls "pushing" (this means not really fighting, just checking out who is stronger), and the chief bull was trying to keep his cows together and at the same time to keep other bulls out of his harem. There was a ranger talk about the elks and many people gathered at various places in the park to see them. As it became darker, there were more elks coming out from the woods.

11.09.00 After visiting the Moraine Park Museum we drove to Estes Park (year-round population 4000, on summer weekends 30,000) which was still pretty crowded, although today is monday. Then we drove on the Trail Ridge Road to the East side of the Park and this is the highest point to which we ever took up our little, cute RV: 3713 m elevation! With a hike at 3600 m elevation, we broke 2 records today. We settled at the Timber Creek Campground and were pleased to have so many elks around us during the evening.
