18.11.00 Flight Hamburg - London Gatwick - Phoenix, Arizona, with British Airways. Departure Hamburg 7:00 AM, arrival Phoenix 2:50 PM (time difference minus 8 hours). Tom & Jutta were waiting for us, and we had a delicious dinner with cebiche. Then we relaxed watching the movie "Tombstone". I fell asleep many times, it's no wonder because for us it was 3 or 4 in the morning.
18.11.00 Flug Hamburg - London Gatwick - Phoenix, Arizona, mit British Airways. Abflug Hamburg 7.00 Uhr, Ankunft Phoenix 14.50 Uhr (Zeitverschiebung -8 Stunden). Wir wurden von Tom & Jutta abgeholt, haben wunderbar bei denen zu Abend gegessen - es gab sogar Cebiche! - und wir haben uns noch den Film "Tumbstone" angesehen. Ich bin dabei ständig eingeschlafen, schließlich war es für uns 3 oder 4 Uhr morgens.

19.11.00 After some pancake (for me, Volker) and chorizo (for Julia and me) breakfast, prepared by Jutta and Tom, we drove to the Tonto National Forest. After the 30 min drive we hiked into the desert, sometimes along a trail, but mostly right through the desert. A creek suddenly crossed our way. According to Tom, it must have been the rain a week ago which still provided the water for this creek. After lunch at Jutta's home, Tom helped us with some minor repairs in the camper. Nice dinner at a Mexican restaurant, El Encanto, in Cave Creek.
19.11.00 Nach dem Frühstück mit Pancakes (für mich, Volker) und Chorizo (für Julia und mich) fuhren wir in den Tonto National Forest. Nach einer 30min Fahrt zu Fuß ab in die Wüste, teilweise entlang Wanderwege, aber meistens quer durch die Landschaft. Auf einmal ein kleiner Fluß, der unerwartet vor uns auftauchte. Tom meint, das Wasser kommt noch vom Regen letzte Woche. In ein paar Wochen ist es dann vermutlich vorbei mit diesem Fluß. Nachdem wir uns eine halbe Stunde am Fluß entlanggequält haben, durch Dornenbüsche und Bäume gezwängt haben, ging es zurück zum Wagen. Nach einem Mittagessen bei Jutta haben wir mit Toms Hilfe kleine Reparaturen an unserem Wohni durchgeführt. Abends hatten wir ein nettes Abendessen im Mexikanischen Restaurant El Encanto, in Cave Creek.

20.11.00 Jutta prepared delicious pancakes for breakfast. I (Julia) ate them for the first time with cottage cheese and I loved it. After breakfast we drove to AAA to get the latest information about Mexico, including maps and guidebooks. Close by at a Circuit City store we bought a new Olympus 3000 digital camera. So the pictures should get even better in the future. Because Julia still had coupons for Carls Jr. fast food restaurants, we ate lunch at one of those places. At a Jiffy Lube we got an oil change and continued to a huge full service BJ Carwash. They have around 80 employees just at this one carwash. Because it gets already dark around 6 pm, we drove back to Jutta and Tom's place for the night.
20.11.00 Jutta hat für das Frühstück schmackhafte Pancakes vorbereitet. Danach war unser Arbeitstag. Als erstes zum AAA Büro für letzte Informationen über Mexiko. Natürlich gab es wieder reichlich Kartenmaterial und ein Tourenbuch. Danach zu einem Circuit-City-Geschäft für eine neue Olympus C3000 Kamera. Ab jetzt müssten die Bilder noch besser sein. Da Julia noch Coupons hatte für Ermäßigungen in einem Carls Jr. Fast-Food-Restaurant, ging es natürlich zu einem dieser Plätze für Hamburger und "Sourdough Sandwich". Dann ab zu einem riesigen BJ Carwash mit vollem Service. Alleine in dieser Auto-Waschanlage arbeiten 80 Leute. Da es gegen 18 Uhr schon dunkel war, sind wir für die Nacht zurück zu Jutta und Tom gefahren.

21.11.00 After coffee, back to the carwash on Bell Road and W51st Street to get our car hqnd waxed. Since we asked for a nice place for breakfast, they drove us with a small bus to a Perkins Restaurant just 4 miles down the road. After one hour, they came back to get us back to our car. Breakfast at Perkins was very nice, even better than Dennys, which is quite difficult. When we came back, we really were astonished that our car looks like new. We had never ever seen a car wash work so effectively and thoroughly as these guys. The afternoon we were busy buying groceries at WalMart and Safeway. On our way into the desert, we stopped at a Flying J truckstop to get gas, propane and water, and to dump our gray water. All of this on the same spot, the so-called RV island. At 5:30 pm we stopped at the Buckeye Hills Recreation Area on Hwy 85 for the night.
21.11.00 Nach einer Tasse Kaffee ging es wieder zurück zur Auto-Waschanlage. Während unser Wohni handgewachst wird, wurden wir mit dem firmeneigenen Shuttle-Bus zu einem Perkins-Restaurant gefahren für eine ausgiebiges Frühstück. Dort war das Frühstück sogar besser als bei Dennys, was nicht einfach ist. Nachdem wir zurückgefahren worden sind, waren wir überrascht, wie neu unser Wohni aussieht. Wir haben noch nie eine solche Waschanlage gesehen, wo die Leute richtig hart arbeiten, gut drauf sind und dazu den Wagen viel sauberer bekommen, als wir das je geschafft hätten. Am Nachmittag wurden Lebensmittel gekauft für unsere geplante Fahrt in die Wüste. Am Ausgang von Phoenix dann der vorletzte Stop an einem grossen Flying J Truckstop. Dort haben wir Diesel, Wasser und Propanegas getankt, und unser Abwasser abgelassen. Alles an der gleichen Stelle in der Tankstelle. Um 17.30 Uhr sind wir in die Buckeye Hills Recreation Area an der Straße 85 zur Übernachtung reingefahren.

22.11.00 - 23.11.00 On the 22nd, we spent the day in the Rec. Area to do all kinds of small work in our camper, like getting everything organized, cleaning the camper and so on. After this day we at least knew what we had on bord and what we didn't. Therefore, in the evening, we drove back to the WalMart to get all the missing important things like wine, steaks... The next morning, we were on the road again to Ajo and into the Organ Pipe National Monument. At Ajo, we got finally our air filter exchanged by a good and inexpensive Mexican mechanics (who only spoke Spanish) and hat a nice lunch at a restaurant on the main plaza. Today is Thanksgiving Day, so of course we had stuffed turkey with all the extras like mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, cranberry sauce, and much more. At the National Monument we got one of the few empty spaces at the campground between cacti, and went on the Desert View trail in the evening for a 1.5 mile walk. This was again a typical day in this area: during daytime it is sunny and quite warm, around 21 °C, but at night the temperature drops down to around 5 °C.
22.11.00 - 23.11.00 Am 22.11. haben wir den Tag in der Recreation Area verbracht. Wir waren voll beschäftigt mit Dingen wie Aufräumen, Saubermachen und versuchen, den Überblick zu bekommen, über das, was wir an Bord haben und auch nicht. Am Abend fuhren wir dann zum Wal Mart, um all die fehlenden Sachen einzukaufen, z. B. Wein, Steaks. Am nächsten Morgen ging es dann weiter nach Ajo und zum Organ Pipe National Monument. Endlich haben wir in Ajo unseren Luftfilter ausgetauscht bekommen durch einen guten und preiswerten mexikanischen Mechaniker, der allerdings nur spanisch sprach. Da heute "Thanksgiving Day" ist, sind wir während der anschließenden Stadtbesichtigung in Ajo in ein Restaurant und haben uns natürlich an dem für den heutigen Tag typischen "Truthahn-Essen" satt gegessen. Im Organ Pipe National Monument haben wir einen der letzten Plätze im Campingplatz inmitten von Kakteen ergattert und sind danach noch den Desert View Trail entlang marschiert (2.5 km). Dies ist wieder einer der typischen Tage in dieser Gegend: tagsüber sonnig und etwas über 20° warm, aber abends nach Sonnenuntergang fällt die Temperatur bis in die Nähe des Gefrierpunktes.
