26.12.00 Oaxaca - Mitla
Saying goodbye to our various friends of the last few days took a certain
time. Especially after an interesting talk with Karin and Gustav Upmeyer
from Germany, who bought an American RV to travel in the states for a few
years. But finally, we were off to Mitla. After a few miles, the first
stop. At El Tule, which is supposed to be the biggest tree in the world, a
more than 2000 year old juniper tree. Next stop were the ruins at Dainzú,
where there are three buildings uncovered. At Mitla, our last stop for
today, we saw ruins from the Zapotecs and Mixtecs Indians. However, just
in the middle of the ruins the Spaniards built a church into the old
courtyard. Camping overnight at the Balneario (public swimming pool) La
Guadalupana in Mitla.
26.12.00 Oaxaca - Mitla
Es hat heute morgen etwas länger gedauert, bis wir loskamen. Unter
anderem dadurch, dass am Vortage abends in der Nähe von uns ein
amerikanisches Wohnmobil mit deutscher Besatzung angekommen ist - mit
Karin und Gustav Upmeyer aus Bielefeld. Dann ging es los in Richtung
Mitla. Allerdings war schon nach 10 km der erste Stopp: El Tule, der "größte"
Baum der Welt. Dieser Zederbaum ist über 2000 Jahre alt und soll den
größten Baumumfang der Welt haben. Danach zu den Ruinen von
Dainzú. Drei Gebäude wurden dort ausgegraben, inklusive ein
sog. Ballspielplatz. Bei Mitla, dem letzten Stopp für heute, sind
Ruinen der Zapoteken und Mixteken zu besichtigen. Inmitten dieser Ruinen
haben die Spanier eine Kirche gebaut. Übernachtung auf dem Balneario
(öffentliches Schwimmbad) "La Guadalupana" von Mitla.

27.12.00 Mitla - Tehuantepec, Oaxaca
A long drive took us to Tehuantepec, Oaxaca. It was a 6 hours drive,
always going up and down the mountains, with an average speed of around 40
km/h. Finally, at the Santa Teresa Trailer Park in Tehuantepec we met all
the caravans again. In the evening our American friends had organized a
nice show with music, costumes and food.
27.12.00 Mitla - Tehuantepec, Oaxaca
Eine lange Fahrt von Mitla nach Tehuantepec, Oaxaca. Während der
ganzen 6stündigen Fahrt ging es ständig die Berge rauf und
runter. Unsere Durchschnittsgeschwindigkeit lag dabei höchstens bei
40 km/h. Auf dem Santa Teresa Trailer Park in Tehuantepec haben wir dann
alle Karavanen wiedergesehen. Am Abend haben unsere amerikanischen Freunde
eine hübsche Show mit Musik, Kostümen und Essen organisiert.

28.12.00 Tehuantepec, Oaxaca - Tuxtla Gutiérrez,
Chiapas
Again a long drive to Tuxtla. Lots of wind on the first part; we even met
one of our American RVers with his awning blown away. And then we came
into the state of Chiapas, with a strong Maya population. Only a few years
ago, in 1994, there was a Zapatista uprising in this area, with army
moving in and some fighting. In Tuxtla we visited the well known zoo, met
Marek and Irena from Polen, but living in Bremen since almost 25 years,
and as our American friends. They were staying overnight in the parking
lot of the convention center, with an all night security person and
invited us to join them.
28.12.00 Tehuantepec, Oaxaca - Tuxtla Gutiérrez,
Chiapas
Und wieder eine lange Fahrt nach Tuxtla, der Hauptstadt des Staates
Chiapas. Am Anfang sehr viel Wind; am Wegesrand ein amerikanisches
Wohnmobil, dem der Wind die Markise weggerissen hat. Und dann waren wir in
Chiapas, einem Staat mit einer großen Maya-Bevölkerung. Vor ein
paar Jahren, 1994, fand hier eine Revolte der Zapatistas statt, und die
Armee ist hier einmaschiert, um die Gebiete zurückzuerobern. In
Tuxtla haben wir den bekannten Zoo besucht, haben dort Marek und Irena aus
Polen - die aber schon fast 25 Jahre in Bremen leben - kennengelert, und
ausserdem noch unsere amerikanische Freunde getroffen. Wir wurden
freundlicherweise von denen eingeladen, ebenfalls auf dem Parkplatz des
Konferenzcenters in Tuxla zu übernachten, wo eine Wachperson von
ihnen angehäuert wurde, die Nacht über Wache zu halten.

de las Casas, Chiapas.
A ride through the Sumidero Canyon by boat in the morning revealed the
sheer cliffs dropping down almost 1000 m to the river. We even saw monkeys
and crocodiles along the river next to beautiful great blue herons, egrets
and cormorans. After this interesting boat ride we moved on to San Cristóbal
de las Casas, the Indian center of the Mexican highlands.

Eine Fahrt durch die Sumidero-Schlucht mit dem Boot am Morgen zeigte uns
die steilen Wände, die hier 1000 m hoch sind. Während der
Bootsfahrt sahen wir sogar Affen und Krokodile nebst wunderschöne
Graureiher, weiße Reiher sowie Kormorane entlang des Flusses. Danach
fuhren wir weiter nach San Cristóbal de las Casas, das indianische
Zentrum des Mexikanischen Hochlandes.

30.12.00 Today we took a tour to very interesting different sites south of town. At first, we visited the Rancho Nuevo caves, where we walked for around 800 m through an active cave with lots of stalactites and stalagmites. Next the ruins of Tenam Puente, a Maya site with partly excavated ruins. This is one of those big areas where there are just lost of pyramids, terraces and ball courts. The final stop on this tour was the lake area of Montebello, the Lagunas de Montebello National Park. There are 59 lakes in tropical forest, just at the Guatemala/Mexican border. We visited just 8 of these lakes, but the location in this forest was something special. At the first lake, Tziscao Laake, we even took a small tour on a raft.
30.12.00 Heute haben wir eine lange Tour zu sehr verschiedenen Sehenswürdigkeiten unternommen. Als erstes die Rancho Nuevo Höhlen, in die wir 800 m tief eingedrungen sind. Viele Stalaktiten und Stalagmiten in dieser Tropfsteinhöhle. Danach die Ruinen von Tenam Puente, einer Mayastadt, die teilweise ausgegraben wurde. Eine ausgedehnte Fläche mit mehreren Pyramiden, Terrassen und Ballspielplätze. Der letzte Halt war im Nationalpark Lagunas de Montebello. Hier sind 59 Seen in einem tropischen Wald, entlang der Guatemala/Mexiko Grenze. Wir haben davon acht besichtigt. Auf dem Tziscao See haben wir sogar eine kleine Floßfahrt unternommen.

31.12.00 San Cristóbal de las Casas,
Chiapas.
Trip to the small indian villages of Chamula and Zinacantán. You
really can imagine that it looked this way hundreds of years ago.
Everybody dressed up in their traditional costume. This was a guided tour
with the Mexican tour guide "Mercedes". She spoke good english
and gave some kind of "lecture" between the sights in various
chapels. The church was full of people doing healing ceremonies in the
shamanism way, and all these religious rituals had nothing to do with
catholicism. After Chamula we did a nice hike over a mountain and then
down to the indian village of Zinacantán (6 km). In the evening, we
had a nice dinner with the American Adventure Caravans group. At around
10.30 pm, Terri and Mike Church, Lee and Tom Walker, and ourselves walked
into San Cristóbal to see what´s going on. Already after a 15
min walk we came right into a block party on a side street. The people
living on this street had blocked off the whole street, had campfires
right on the street, and a life music band playing real good music. Of
course we also checked out the downtown area, but the most action was on
this street in a residential district. As soon as we arrived, we were
invited to join the dancing. We were invited to some brandy, mezcal
(similar to tequila) and to some food. One family even invited us into
their house. So we stayed there until 2 in the morning.
31.12.00 San Cristóbal de las Casas,
Chiapas.
Eine geführe Tour zu zwei Indianerdörfern in der Gegend stand
heute auf unserem Programm. Als erstes der Besuch von Chamula. Alle Leute
in ihren traditionellen Kostümen und viele "verrückte"
Sachen in diesem Dorf. Zwischen den Sehenswürdigkeiten gab es von
unserer Führerin, der Mexikanerin Mercedes, kleine Vorträge in
Kapellen über Traditionen, indianische Kultur und Religion. Die
katholische Kirche war voll mit Indianern, jedoch hatte dies nichts mit
Katholizismus zu tun, sondern Schamanismus und mit Heilungsritualen für
Kranke und ähnliche Dinge. Danach ging es mit einem 6 km langen
Spaziergang über einem Berg runter nach Zinacantán, einem
anderen Indianerdorf mit anderen Kostümen und Traditionen. Am Abend
hatten wir ein nettes Abendessen zusammen mit der amerikanischen
Adventure-Caravans-Gruppe. Gegen 22.30 Uhr sind Terri und Mike Church, Lee
und Tom Walker und wir in die Stadt gegangen, um zu sehen, wie die
Mexikaner das Neue Jahr begrüßen. Schon nach 15 min sahen wir
eine Straßenparty in einer Nebenstraße. Die Anwohner an der
Straße hatten die ganze Straße abgesperrt mit diversen
Holzfeuern auf dem Asphalt und es spielte eine sehr gute Gruppe. Natürlich
haben wir noch das Zentrum besucht, aber die beste Stimmung war in dieser
Nebenstraße in einer Wohngegend. Als wir ankamen, wurden wir sofort
zum Tanzen aufgefordert. Ab und zu kam jemand aus den umliegenden Häusern
vorbei mit Brandy, Mezcal (ähnlich zu Tequila) und einigen Snacks.
Eine Familie hat uns sogar in Ihr Haus eingeladen. Gegen 2 Uhr morgens
machten wir uns auf den Rückweg.
