07.01.01 Mérida, Yucatán
A guided tour to the Celestún Biosphere Reserve was our program today, together with Terri and Mike. This is one of the few breeding grounds in the northern hemisphere for the American flamingo. Of course we saw also lots of other birds, like different kinds of cormorants, the white pelican, wood-stork, herons and egrets. After arriving back in Mérida at around 4:30 pm, we watched the big action going on at the main plaza. On three of the four corners stages had been set up, and somewhere always a band was playing. We looked at all the different food stands and ate nearly everything they offered!

Shopping in Mérida this morning consisted of a visit to the very nice supermarket Carrefour for groceries and to Liverpool, a very fancy department store, for internet access. Our next destination is Izamal, a small village with a huge Franciscan convent (the largest in Mexico) and church. As it was very often done, the convent and church sit right on top of a Maya pyramid. The Pope visited this place in 1993 and it looked like they did a lot of painting in this year. Before it got dark, we arrived in Chichén Itza, one of the big sites for Maya ruins. Overnight at the trailer park of the Stardust Hotel.

The visit of the ruins took us most of the morning. We walked to the ruins very early to beat the tour bus crowds and arrived at 9 a.m., with no tour bus in sight. When we left at around 1 p.m., we counted 22 tour buses at the parking lot. In Chichén Itza, there are several hundred buildings, with 30 buildings fully restored. The most famous of these buildings is the one you see in all the advertisement leaflets of Mexico, "El Castillo". It is perfectly symmetric and dominates the whole site. In the evening, we barbecued some nice steaks on our grill and had, after a long time, once again a steak dinner.

It is always an experience to find spare parts in Mexico. We needed some screws for Julia's bicycle and other things, but usually I have more screws at home in the basement as the hardware stores in Mexico. After some searching we find some, but you better don't need spare parts in Mexico. After lunch we drove on the new toll road to Cancún, where we checked in the Mecologo Trailer Park. On our approach to Cancún, we stopped for an oil change. The mexican mechanic did a good job, but we have never seen such a dirty place. Everything was so oily, you had really to be carefull not to touch anything.

Öl überall, wo man hinschaute.

11.01.01 Cancún and Isla Mujeres, Quintana Roo
Since our campground is located not far from the ferry side to the island Isla Mujeres, we took a daytrip today to this place. However, when we arrived at the ferry site we discovered that we had to wait over one hour for the ferry. Therefore, we took a water taxi, not only to the island, but also to various snorkeling places near the island. So we spent a full day swimming, snorkeling and boat riding. The snorkeling was very exciting, with lots of small and big fishes to see, like some barracudas and reef fish. Just to make everybody jealous: temperature was around 32° C in the air and 26° C in the water.
