12.01.01 Cancún - Puerto Morelos, Quintana Roo
Cancún consists of a 35 km long spit with very fancy (and expensive) hotels, restaurants and malls. Of course, we have to do some shopping (Julia), swimming (Volker) and sightseeing. However, in the evening we drove on to Puerto Morelos, where we stayed at a nice small campgroung, Acamaya Reef, directly at the beach.

Cancún ist eine 35 km lange Landzunge mit feinen (und teuren) Hotels, Restaurants und Shopping Centers. Natürlich muss man die Strandstraße von Cancún entlangfahren. Ausserdem ist dies natürlich die Gelegenheit zum Einkaufen (Julia), Schwimmen (Volker) und einfach nur Besichtigung. Am Abend sind wir dann allerdings weitergefahren nach Puerto Morelos. Hier haben wir unser Lager bezogen an einem kleinen Campingplatz direkt am Strand, Acamaya Reef.

Being with our RV almost on the beach, it is really neat to just walk into the water and get back home in a few seconds. A nice walk of approx. 3,5 km to nearby Puerto Morelos, with a visit to a really big english bookstore, was our morning activity. Than we hired a boat and did a snorkeling tour to the nearby reef. This reef is crowded with fishes of all different sizes. We saw two sting rays, barracudas, and an incredible number of different reef fishes and many more.

Da wir ziemlich direkt am Strand mit unserem Wohni stehen ist es besonders angenehm, einfach nach Lust und Laune ins Wasser zu springen und ein paar Sekunden später "zu Hause" zu sein. Ein schöner Spaziergang von ca. 3,5 km nach Puerto Morelos, einer hübschen kleinen Stadt mit einem erstaunlich großen englischen Buchladen war unsere Aktivität am Morgen. Danach haben wir ein kleines Boot gemietet, welches uns zu diversen Stellen am vorgelagerten Riff brachte. Dort war Schnorcheln angesagt. Das Riff ist bevölkert von Fischen in verschiedenen Größen, wie in einem Aquarium. Unter anderem sahen wir zwei Mantas, Barracudas, große Mengen von Korallenfischen und viel mehr.

14.01.01 Puerto Morelos, Quintana Roo
We have very nice Canadian (from Winnepeg, Manitoba) neighbors at the campground: Louise and Roland Pfitzner. And they invited us for today to join them on the trip to the ruins of Coba. Therefore we had a nice drive to Coba, a Maya site build around 600 A.D. Of the more than 5,000 mounds only a few have been uncovered yet. So we visited the Nohoch Mul, the tallest pyramid in the Yucatan with 42 m high, and the other excavated ruins. On our drive back we stopped at Playa del Carmen. This town developed in the last five years from a small fishing village into a large Caribbean resort. Lots of tourists there, especially Europeans.

Wir haben sehr nette kanadische Nachbarn (aus Winnepeg, Manitoba): Louise und Roland Pfitzner. Sie luden uns für heute ein zu einem Ausflug zu den Ruinen von Coba. Also ab nach Coba, eine Ruinenstatt der Mayas, erbaut im Jahr 600 n.Chr. Von den mehr als 5.000 Ruinenhügeln wurden bis jetzt nur wenige ausgegraben. Wir sahen unter anderem Nohoch Mul, die höchste Pyramide im Yucatán (42 m hoch). Auf unserer Fahrt zurück ein Halt in Playa del Carmen. Diese Stadt war noch vor 5 Jahren ein verschlafenes Fischerdorf. Jetzt ist sie ein großes karibische Touristenziel. Eine Riesenmenge Touristen, vor allem Europäer.

15.01.01 Puerto Morelos, Quintana Roo
After some snorkeling directly from the beach at the campground, Louise and Roland assembled a Zodiac boat they had brought with them in their motorhome. With this boat we drove out to the reef, where we spent a few hours snorkeling in the middle of all the reef fish. Later that day Julia and Louise drove to Puerto Morelos and bought some lobster and red snapper directly from local fisherman. Grilled on the barbecue, we had a very nice dinner together.

Morgens sind wir gleich ins Wasser und haben eine Schnorcheltour unternommen. Etwas später haben Louise und Roland Ihr Zodiak-Schlauch-Boot zusammengebaut, welches Sie in ihrem Wohnmobil dabei haben. Damit ging es dann raus zum vorgelagerten Riff, in dem wir mehrere Stunden mit Schnorcheln verbrachten. Danach fuhren Louise und Julia nach Puerto Morelos und haben direkt von den Fischern Hummer und "Red Snapper" gekauft. Auf den Grill gelegt, hatten wir zusammen ein hervorragendes Abendessen.

16.01.01 Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo
Today we finally made it. After spending 3 beautiful days with Louise and Roland, we were strong enough to leave the campground and move on to our next destination, Playa del Carmen. After some grocery shopping, we finally arrived at the campground in the middle of the city, directly at the beach. It is very convenient to stay directly at the beach, but still in the middle of a very tourist-minded city.

Heute haben wir es endlich geschafft. Nach drei wunderschöne Tage, die wir mit Louise und Roland verbracht haben, haben wir all unsere Kraft zusammengenommen und sind endlich von diesem Campingplatz losgefahren, nach Playa del Carmen. Nach einem größerern Lebensmitteleinkauf kamen wir abends auf den Campingplatz, der inmitten der Stadt direkt am Strand liegt, an. Es ist sehr angenehm, direkt am Strand und trotzdem inmitten der Stadt zu sein.

17.01.01 Cozumel Island, Quintana Roo
In the morning we took the ferry to the famous island of Cozumel, another one of these international tourist attractions (like Cancún and Playa del Carmen). We rented a small motorcycles and drove around the island, stopping at some places for snorkeling and swimming.

Morgens sind wir mit der Fähre zur Insel Cozumel hinübergefahren, eine weiteres großes Touristenziel an der Maya Riviera (wie Cancún und Playa del Carmen). Wir haben auf dieser Insel uns ein gleines Motorrad gemietet und sind damit herumgefahren. Natürlich haben wir auch geschnorchelt und geschwommen (mit Tauchen die Haupttätigkeiten auf der Insel).

18.01.01 Playa del Carmen - Soliman Bay, Quintana Roo
Further south we drove along the so called Maya Riviera. Lots of beach areas along the road, with developments like hotels, eco-parks, beach resorts etc. A stop at Akumal for some snorkeling in the Yalku Lagoon was our biggest activity for today. Later we drove to the restaurant and campground Soliman near Tulúm, where we are standing near palm trees at the beach.

Die Fahrt ging weiter südlich an der sogenannten Maya Riviera entlang. Jede Menge Strände, viele Attraktionen für Touristen wie Hotels, ökologische Parks, Strandbäder etc. Ein Halt in Akumal, eines der wichtigsten Tauch- und Schnorchelgebiete, für eine Stunde Schnorcheln in der Yalku Lagune, war heute unsere größte Aktivität. Danach sind wir weitergefahren zu dem Restaurant und Campingplatz Soliman, in der Nähe von Tulúm. Hier stehen wir direkt am Palmenbewachsenen Strand.

19.01.01 Tulúm, Quintana Roo
We drove early in the morning to the Parque Nacional Xel-Ha, a lagoon along the cost with lots of activity. This lagoon is a safe harbor for many species of fish, and during our snorkeling tour we saw also a sting ray and other sea life. Along the walkways are many Iguanas, not shy at all with all those people around. In the afternoon we made the cultural activity of the day, a visit to the Tulum Archaeological Zone. At this area the Maya ruins are located directly along the beach. After one hour exploring the ruins, we tool advantage of the location (like everybody else) and tool a swim into the ocean to cool down. After all the temperature was at 30° C. The night we stayed in the Tulum parking lot.

19.01.01 Tulúm, Quintana Roo
Morgens ging es ab zum Park Xel-Ha, einer großen Lagune entlang der Küste. Diese Lagune ist ein sicherer Zufluchtsort für alle möglichen Fische, und während unserer Schnorchel-Tour sahen wir neben den üblichen Riff-Fischen auch ein Manta and eine Art Scholle auf dem Seeboden. Auf den Spazierwegen jede Menge großer Iguanas, die mit all diesen Leuten überhaupt nicht mehr scheu sind. Am Nachmittag kam der kulturelle Teil des Tages zum Tragen, der Besuch der Tulum Ruinen. Diese Maya Ruinen liegen direkt am Strand. Nach einer Stunde der Besichtigung nutzten wir die Lage (wie jeder andere auch) und sprangen ins Wasser. Dies war bei um die 30° Lufttemperatur eine willkommene Abkühlung. Übernachtung auf dem Parkplatz der Tulum Ruinen.

..... You have to be careful when walking around in Xel-Ha not to step on some big Iguanas. The lagoon is just waiting for snorkel exploration / Man muß in Xel-Ha beim Gehen sehr aufpassen, daß man nicht aus Versehen auf einen Iguana tritt. Die Lagune lädt geradezu zum Schnorcheln ein.
