30.01.01 Puebla, Puebla - Tepotzotlán,
Mexico
With an early start we achieved to visit the ruins of Teotihuacán
on our drive to Mexico City. Since driving through Mexico City is world
famous for its traffic jams and corrupt police, we decided to drive around
the city on the east side through Tlaxcala to the ruins of Teotihuacán,
just around 40 km outside of Mexico City. These ruins accommodated up to
200.000 people around the year 700 A.D., with buildings dating back to 100
B.C. After a few hours visiting the pyramids of the moon and the sun we
drove into the conglomerate of Mexico City, with a population (nobody
knows the exact numbers) in the vicinity of 24 Million people making it
the biggest city in the world. It took us just 3 hours for the 50 km
through the capital to the northern town of Tepotzotlán, a suburban
town at the northern limit of Mexico City. There we drove to Pepe's
Campground, the only one in the whole Mexico City area!
30.01.01 Puebla, Puebla - Tepotzotlán,
Mexico

31.01.01 Mexico City, Distrito Federal
At 7 a.m. we left for Mexico City. The drive with bus and metro is
supposed to take around 1.5 hours, however, with early morning traffic it
took us 3 hours until we were in the center of the city. We did a tour
with a guide through the historic downtown area, the Zona Rosa and the
Chapultepec park. In the downtown area, we spent some time at the zócalo
-the main plaza- visiting the Palacio National and the Cathedral. Because
Mexico City is build on a former lake bed, there is no real rock beneath
the city, only loose soil. Therefore, the heavy buildings like the
Cathedral slowly sink into the earth, a few inches every year. In the
Chapultepec park a visit to the "Museo Nacional de Antropología"
was a must. In the evening we visited the Ballet Folclórico, a
colorful spectacle celebrating the history of Mexican folk music and
dance, in the beautiful Palacio de Bellas Artes. We already arranged
before to stay in the good and inexpensive Palace Hotel in Mexico City.
31.01.01 Mexico City, Distrito Federal

01.02.01 Mexico City, Distrito Federal (D.F.)
Today we visited the town of Xochimilco, the floating gardens. In the
15th century, when the whole area of today's Mexico City was still a lake
with an Aztec island (Tenochtitlán), the area of Xochimilco had
some chinampas (floating gardens) to grow vegetables and flowers. Today
these waterways are the only remnants of the huge lake in the Mexico City
area. It is quite funny to drift along in one of these rafts, with lots of
activity on the water. There are Mariachi and Marimba bands in various
boats, trying to sell you some life music. Restaurants are on boats, as
are boats selling blankets and other items. After we spent one hour on a
boat, we took the subway and bus and drove back to our campground.

Campingplatz.

After the busy Mexico City days we decided to take one day of rest at our
campground in Tepotzotlán. In the afternoon we walked into the city
center to visit the museum and the church, lavishly decorated with gold
ornaments and carvings.

Querétaro, Querétaro
Our next stop on our way back through the interior of Mexico was Querétaro,
just a 3 hours drive from Mexico City. Therefore we had all afternoon to
stroll around the city, discovering the various plazas which are
scattererd all around, and watching the many marriages taking place today,
a Saturday. For overnight we stay in the campground at Hotel Flamingo.

Hochzeiten. Übernachtung im Campingplatz vom Hotel Flamingo.
