In foggy and rainy weather we left the island and drove to San Antonio,
the 10th largest city in the States. We checked in the KOA and were lucky
to get a space, because due to the big Rodeo going on right now nearly all
the sites were taken. During the afternoon we strolled around downtown San
Antonio, through the Alamo and along the Riverwalk. A show at Rivercenter
Comedy Club with Tommy Chong took us into the night.

In diesigem und regnerischem Wetter haben wir die Insel verlassen und
fuhren nach San Antonio, der 10nd größten Stadt der USA. Wir
fanden glücklicherweise noch einen Platz im KOA-Campingplatz, da
aufgrund des derzeit stattfindenden großen Rodeos fast alles belegt
war. Am Nachmittag Spaziergang durch die Innenstadt, vor allem das
Alamo-Museum und entlang des "Riverwalks". Eine Show im
Rivercenter Comedy Club mit Tommy Chong beendete den Tag.

This is our big day shopping. A drive to the factory outlet center north
of San Antonio resulted in some shopping bags and credit card sales slips.
Later a relaxed evening at the campground.

Dies ist unser großer Einkaufstag. Jede Menge "factory outlet
center" (Fabrik-Direktverkauf)-Geschäfte außerhalb von San
Antonio führten zu vielen Einkaufstüten in unserem Wohni, und
jede Menge Kreditkartenbelege. Danach ein ruhiger Abend auf dem
Campingplatz
15.02.01 San Antonio, TX - Brazos Bend
State Park, TX
A long drive through some not so interesting area brought us to Brazos
Bend State Park, just southwest of Houston. As it was pretty late, we just
strolled through this unique swamp/forest/prairie landscape and already
saw many fantastic birds before we had a nice campfire and some steaks.
The evening was very warm (in the 70s), and we sat outside until 10 pm.

Park, TX
Eine lange Fahrt durch eine eher langweilige Gegend führt uns zum
Brazos Bend State Park, südwestlich von Houston. Da es schon relativ
spät war, sind wir noch kurz durch die einmalige Gegend (Sumpf, Wald
und Prärielandschaft) gegangen und haben dabei viele Vögel
gesehen. Danach bei 25°C warmen Wetter ein Lagerfeurer mit schönen
Steaks.

Livingston, TX
A big rain shower early in the morning and a temperature drop from 70 to
50 °F in just 30 min. After the rain stopped we hit some trails along
the "40 Acre" and the Elm Lakes. A lot of wildlife were out
there, like some alligators, herons, egrets, cardinals, ibis, and more.
After lunch we drove to Livingston, TX, to visit our friends Lee and Tom
Walker who we had met in Mexico leading an Adventure Caravans group. We
enjoyed so much the lovely dinner Lee had prepared. Later Carol and Gary
from Adventure Caravans joined us to a delicious margharita Tom had mixed,
and we were all having a nice time together.

Livingston, TX
Ein starker Regen am Morgen, und die Temperatur fiel innerhalb einer
halben Stunde von 25° auf 10° C. Nachdem der Regen gestoppt hat,
sind wir an den "40-Acre"- und den Elm-Seen spazieren gegangen.
Jede Menge Tiere bekamen wir zu Gesicht, wie z. B. Alligatoren,
Fischreiher, Kardinale, Ibise und mehr. Nach dem Mittagessen fuhren wir
nach Livingston, TX und besuchten Lee und Tom Walker, die wir in Mexiko
kennengelernt haben, als sie eine Adventure-Caravans-Gruppe führten. Überraschenderweise
hatte Lee ein wirklich tolles Abendessen schon vorbereitet. Später
kamen Carol und Gary vom Adventure-Caravans-Büro noch vorbei, und wir
hatten einen schönen Abend zusammen.

17.02.01 Livingston, TX
This was an enjoyable day in Livingston. Lee and Tom drove us to the
Alabama-Coushatta Indian Reservation, and then invited us to an excellent
lunch at the Pickett House near Woodville where we first met their
neighbors Cordelia (Dee) and Vernon Fields, and Jay and Mel Trenary.
Before heading home we got a tour around Lake Livingston. This whole area
really is very nice, much more interesting than many other parts of Texas.
In the evening we had much fun playing "Mexican Train" together
with the especially nice neighbors we knew from lunch time.

Heute hatten wir einen netten und lustigen Tag in Livingston. Lee und Tom
fuhren uns zum Alabama-Coushatta Indianerreservat. Danach wurden wir zum
Mittagessen im Pickett House eingeladen, und bei der Gelegenheit lernten
wir ihren Nachbarn Cordelia (Dee) und Vernon Fields, Jay und Mel Trenary
kennen. Eine Tour am Lake Livingston beendete unsere Ausflugsfahrt heute.
Die ganze Gegend ist sehr hübsch, nicht wie viele Gegende in anderen
Teilen von Texas. Am Abend hatten viel Spaß beim Spiel "Mexican
Train" mit den o.g. Nachbarn.

State Park, LA
Today we got out of Texas and crossed the border to Louisiana. When we
got close to Lake Charles, LA, we decided that we drove enough for today
and stopped at the Sam Houston Jones State Park. We found a nice site in
this campground and had, of course, a some nice steaks on a big campfire.

Heute haben wir die Grenze von Texas überschritten und sind nach
Louisiana gefahren. Als wir in die Nähe von Lake Charles, LA, kamen,
haben wir spontan entschieden, beim Sam Houston Jones State Park für
heute Schluss zu machen. Natürlich hatten wir abends ein schönes
Lagerfeuer mit texanischen Steaks.

Lake Fausse Pointe State Park, LA
During the morning we explored this State Park by foot. Then we drove on
to Lake Fausse Pointe State Park, south of Lafayette in the middle of the
Louisiana swamp area. Just very few roads are in this area, and even
driving to this state park took us some hours along back country roads and
one lane wooden bridges.

Vormittags haben wir diesen State Park zu Fuß erkundet. Danach ging
es weiter zum Lake Fausse Pointe State Park, südlich von Lafayette
inmitten der Louisiana Sumpfgegend. Alleine schon um dahin zu kommen war
ein Erlebnis, mit engen Straßen und einspurigen Holzbrücken.

We took the opportunity and rented a canoe for some water exploration.
This whole area is just a huge lake, very often just 2 feet deep, with
some islands. We basically followed the marked canoe trail to prevent
getting lost in this maze of waterchannels.

Heute ging es aufs Wasser. Wir mieteten uns ein Kanu uns verbrachten
Stunden mit dem Erkunden. Die ganze Gegend sieht aus wie ein riesengroßer
See mit vielen Kanälen und Inseln, meistens nur 1- 2 Meter tief. Es
gab ausgeschielderte Kanuwege, denen wir größtenteils gefolgt
sind.
