21.02.01 Lake Fausse Pointe State Park, LA
- New Orleans, LA
Around 15 miles of dirt road brought us back to the main roads. According
to our map, there should only be water in this area. Of course we often
had water on the right and left hand side of the road. We continued
Highway 90 towards New Orleans. In a small city called Des Allemands we
decided to make an airboat tour into the swamps of this area. Around 20
min later we were on our way into the swamp. A huge area is covered just a
few feet with water -looks from the distance like a garden, but is really
water covered by green plants. The airboat drove over the water, but also
over streets and land, that was cooool! Lots of birds, of course, but also
a few alligators and many nutrias. After this one hour tour we drove
straight into New Orleans, where we arrived early enough to get ready for
the Mardi-Gras Parades. We found a very convenient place near the French
Quarter (just 10 min by bus) at the Amoco Truck Stop on Elysian Fields Ave
N. During Mardi Gras, there are many parades in this city. Today there are
three, however we just visited the Saturn parade in the uptown district.
Lots of people at this two hour parade with many marching bands and
floats. These floats throw down many necklaces called beads. Julia and I
were able to get quite 62 of them! After the parade, we strolled around
Bourbon Street in the French Quarter with many bars having life music and
women trying to get some more beads by showing their breasts...

Über 20 km von Schotterstraßen führte uns zurück zu
besiedelten Gebieten. Nach unsere Karte hätte es in dieser Gegend gar
keine Straße geben dürfen, nur Wasser. Natürlich hatten
wir oft auch nur Wasser rechts und links. Auf dem Highway 90 fuhren wir
weiter Richtung New Orleans. Bei einer kleinen Stadt, Des Allemands,
beschlossen wir, eine "Airboat"-Tour durch die Gegend zu
unternehmen. 20 min später saßen wir auf einen "Luftboot",
welche nur durch einen Propeller am Ende angetrieben werden. Dieses Boot fährt
durch das Wasser, aber es fuhr auch über Land und Straßen, das
war cooool! Kurz nach dem Start waren wir schon mitten im Sumpfgebiet,
einer großen Gegend bedeckt mit Wasser -sieht von weitem wie eine
schöne Wiese, ist aber nur Wasser bedeckt durch grünes Zeug.
Viele Vögel, aber auch Alligatoren und Nutrias. Nach dieser einstündigen
Tour fuhren wir weiter nach New Orleans. Wir sind zum Glück früh
genug angekommen, so dass wir noch einen Karnevals-Umzug am Abend sehen
konnten. Unser Übernachtungsplatz beim Amoco-Truck Stop (an der
Elysian Fields Ave. N) liegt nur 10 min mit dem Bus von French Quarter,
dem Innenstadtbereich, entfernt. Beim New Orleans Karneval, dem sog.
Mardi-Gras, finden jeden Tag mehrere Umzüge statt. Heute standen drei
Umzüge auf dem Programm, wovon wir uns den Saturn-Umzug im "Uptown"
District angeschaut haben. Viele Menschen, viele Spielmannszüge und
auch viele Wagen. Statt Bonbons werden (Plastik-)Perlenketten in die
Menschenmenge geworfen, und wir hatten genug Glück, davon 62 zu
fangen! Nach dem Umzug sind wir noch die Bourbon Street entlang gewandert,
mit viel Life-Musik aus allen Lokalen. Auch ist die Tradition dort, dass
zu Mardi-Gras die Frauen die besagten Perlenketten bekommen, wenn Sie ihre
Brüste zeigen...

Park, LA
After a nice breakfirst at Denny's we visited a travel agency to arrange
our trip between the Hawaiin islands. Later we drove on across the Lake of
Pontchartrain (the bridge is 28 miles long) and settled in Fontainebleau
State Park, where we stayed for the night
22.02.01 New Orleans - Fontainebleau State Park, LA
Nach einem Frühstück bei Denny's besuchten wir ein Reisebüro,
um unseren Inner-Hawai Flug zu buchen. Danach ab über den
Pontchartrain See (die Brücke ist 45 km lang) zum Fontainebleau State
Park, in dem wir übernachten.

23.02.01 Fontainebleau State Park, LA - Gulfport,
MS
After some miles on the Interstate 10 we made a stop at the FlyingJ
Truckstop. They are perfectly equipped for RVs, with special stations for
fill-up, water and dump stations. In addition, they also have a Truck
Driver Lounge with telephones and jacks for connecting the laptop with the
internet. In Gulfport we went into a nice movie theater, seeing the movie
"The wedding planner" with Jennifer Lopez and "Sweet
November" with Keanu Reaves. Overnight stay at the Sam's Club in
Gulfport.
23.02.01 Fontainebleau State Park, LA -
Gulfport, MS
Nach etlichen Meilen auf der Autobahn 10 machten wir unseren planmäßigen
Halt bei einer Flying J LKW-Raststätte. Diese bieten vollen Service für
Wohnmobile, u.a. günstiges Benzin bzw. Diesel an eigenen Zapfsäulen,
Frischwasser und Abwasser-Entsorgung. Weiterhin gibt es den LKW-Fahrer
Aufenthaltsraum, mit Tischen und Stühlen, und vielen Telefonen mit
der Möglichkeit, den Computer an das Internet anzuschließen.
Danach fuhren wir weiter bis Gulfport. Hier nutzten wir die Gelegenheit,
in einem großen und schicken Kino uns die Filme "The Wedding
Planer" mit Jennifer Lopez und "Sweet November" mir Keanu
Reaves anzuschauen. Übernachtung auf dem Parkplatz von Sams Club,
einem großen Supermarkt für Großverbraucher (gehört
zur Walmart Gruppe) in Gulfport.
24.02.01 Gulfport, MS - Gulf Island
National Seashore at Ocean Springs, MS
As we drove along the gulf cost we were surprised to see many old and
beautiful houses directly along the beach. In the afternoon we drove to
one of the many parades that are beeing held everywhere right now, and we
visited the one in Pascagoula, a small fishing village. However, it was a
long parade with at least 30 different floats and lots of beads thrown
into the crowd. In the evening we drove to the Gulf Island National
Seashore, near Ocean Springs, were we stay for the night. After dark we
made a small hike looking for wildlife along the road and were lucky to
see a racoon, beeing a little bit dizzy by our flashlight.

Als wir die Golfküste entlangfuhren, waren wir sehr überrascht,
soviele große und schicke ältere Häuser gegenüber dem
Strand zu sehen. Zur Zeit gibt es überall Umzüge, so dass wir
entschlossen, uns den Umzug in Pascagoula anzuschauen. Obwohl eine relativ
kleine Stadt, war der Umzug ziemlich groß mit über 30 Wagen. Am
Abend dann zum Gulf Island National Seashore in der Nähe von Ocean
Springs. In diesem Nationalpark verbringen wir auch die Nacht. Bei einem
Abendspaziergang kurz nach Sonnenuntergang waren wir noch so glücklich,
einen Waschbär zu beobachten.

25.02.01 Ocean Springs / Gulf Island
National Seashore, MS
Today, a sunday, we attended a church service in a "black"
church. Yesterday we got the necessary information at the visitor center,
so we were on time for a very different service. The church and the city
of Ocean Springs are just a few miles from the National Seashore,
therefore, we took the bikes out for a ride into town. In the church was
not only an organ, but also a piano and drums. The pianist girl played
jazzy music and had a wonderful voice. There was always some kind ofmusic
going on, such as gospel, soul, and -because it is black history month-
there was even a little show in the church about black women in history.
This was really a very happy and cheerful mass. After the service we biked
around with our bicycles and took a closer look at this town, Ocean
Springs. It has a nice beach, a very relaxed atmosphere, and all the
people were very nice. Because it started to rain in the afternoon, we
drove back to our campground.
25.02.01 Ocean Springs / Gulf Island National Seashore,
MS
Heute, ein Sonntag, haben wir einen Gottesdienst in einer "schwarzen"
Kirche besucht. Dazu haben wir gestern die nötige Information vom
hiesigen Ocean-Springs-Visitor Center bekommen. Die Kirche und Ocean
Springs sind nur ein paar Kilometer entfernt von dem Nationalpark, und mit
den Fahrrädern waren wir in 15 min dort. In der Kirche sah es schon
sehr anders aus als gewohnt. Neben der Orgel gab es ein Piano und ein
Schlagzeug auf dem erhobenen Podest. Die Music ging in Richtung Jazz,
Gospel und Soul, und, da der Februar als Thema die Geschichte der
Schwarzen hat, gab es eine kleine Aufführung über die schwarze
Frauen. Das war wirklich mal eine ganz andere Art von Messe, viel fröhlicher
und mit viel Musik untermalt. Nach dem Gottesdienst fuhren wir noch mit
dem Fahrrad durch die Stadt. Diese ist erstaunlich hübsch, mit einem
schönen Strand an der Golfküste, Hafen und einer netten
Innenstadt. Als es am Nachmittag zu regnen anfing, ging es ab "nach
Hause" zum Campingplatz.

After spending the morning in the park walking and biking, we drove just
a few miles to Pascagoula, MS. There we stopped (and, of course, shopped)
at the Walmart for the night.

Nacht gestoppt (und, natürlich, geshoppt)
